If you are staying in Orlando, Florida near major tourist attractions, you can enjoy a few hours away from parks, shops and the main hustle and bustle for a stroll along quiet nature trails.

During our last visit we visited the Tibet-Butler Nature Reserve: 8777 State Road 535, Shore Of Lake Tibet-Butler, Orlando, FL 32836. Admission is free and practically a stone’s throw from the main theme parks, this rural park of 440 acres allows you to experience ‘natural’ Florida.

Upon arrival we stopped at the visitor center before taking one of the many hiking trails. The center has a variety of exhibits that will appeal to both children and adults. There are a variety of interesting “nature” brochures, including “living with alligators” and a trail map. Children especially will enjoy the interactive screens – press the frog call buttons to hear the different calls and get ready for the authentic thunder and lightning display. See the schedule of programs and walks led by naturalists.

Once we picked up our trail map, we stopped at the drink machine; We recommend bringing drinks, bug spray, lots of sunscreen, and even snacks so you can enjoy the trails in comfort. The restrooms are located behind the visitor center.

We took the trail that leads to the Osprey view. The trail consisted of sandy trails and elevated boardwalks; we were lucky enough to see an armadillo from the boardwalk looking for its food in the undergrowth. At Osprey View there are seats where you can enjoy looking across the small pond to the large lake beyond. We saw some lovely birds like egrets and eagles. Children, I am sure I will enjoy a couple of hours walking freely on the nature trails and boardwalks.

Returning to the visitor center, we enjoyed a moment of relaxation sitting in the rocking chairs on the terrace. We then explored the wildlife circle next to the visitor center. There was what looked like a small Dormouse peeking out from its little burrow, many tiny birds and a turtle.

There are picnic benches along the steps of the visitor center where you can enjoy a break.

Directions: Take Exit 68 (Lake Buena Vista) from I-4 West. Head north about 5 miles on CR 535 (Winter Garden-Vineland Road). The entrance to the reserve is on the east (right) side of the road.

After our visit, in about 10/15 minutes we were enjoying a nice walk through Downtown Disney before dinner.
