Ever wanted to try a crazy hair color but don’t want to commit? Kool-Aid hair dye is a great way to test colors at home without making a dramatic change or spending a lot of money.

The lighter your hair, the more dramatic your Kool-Aid hair color will look. So those with blonde or bleached hair can expect a much more drastic look than those with darker hair. However, people with darker hair can still get a good color.

This is how you do it:

  1. Put on rubber or latex gloves to protect your skin from stains.
  2. Select your flavor of Kool-Aid WITHOUT SWEET
  3. Fruit punch gives hair a red tint
  4. A combination of blue raspberry and grape gives the hair a violet look.
  5. How much do you need (if you have very thick hair, you will need a few more packs):
  6. For very short hair (think a couple inches above the shoulder), three bundles should give you a good color.
  7. Of medium length (around your shoulder), six bundles should be enough.
  8. Long hair (a couple inches below the shoulders) should probably wear nine or more bundles to get a good color.
  9. Pour your packets into a container and then add a few drops of water and a little bit of your favorite conditioner. You just need to add enough water and conditioner to turn the mixture into a paste.
  10. Mix everything together until it is a smooth paste (think like toothpaste with no clumps or bubbles)
  11. Cover hair with paste, applying Kool-Aid evenly throughout hair.
  12. Try to stay away from the scalp and forehead; however, if you make a mistake, you can rub your skin with a warm washcloth or petroleum jelly to clear up the mistakes.
  13. Cover your head with plastic wrap or a plastic shower cap and sleep with your Kool-Aid paste.
  14. Wash and condition normally to remove Kool-Aid and then style as usual.
