Mortein Peaceful Nights

A Mortein Peaceful Nights Review is a first hand account of a short novel written by an author who also dabbles in history, fantasy and religion. This book has many legs, and if you read it slowly, you might just get chills running down your spine. The author, Jan Pickering, is an ex-nun who has now written her first non-fiction book in over 20 years. She took several years to write this book, working out the characters and events while living in a tiny town in northern France, where she experienced the events as a child.

The story begins with a series of events that leave the reader confused and wondering what exactly is going on. One night a pack of youths from a nearby orphanage visit the town to offer their services as foster boys. They seem to have no problem taking care of the younger children but when one of the boys goes missing, the rest of the group becomes suspicious. Things do not go to plan and one boy is found dead, having been beaten to death.

With the help of a hired detective, the search for the killers proceeds and this time the lead investigator, Mathieu Bellouel, even gets himself involved in the hunt. While solving this crime, the book shifts to the town of Mortein itself where a terrible crime has just been perpetrated. This book soon takes a dark turn when two teens, Sienna and Lexy are discovered to be suspects in the murder.

As the investigation unfolds, details of the crime came to light and the tension rises. When Lexy is suspected, her own mother makes a visit to the police station to ask for information on the case. It is then learned that the girls were actually lovers and that their supposed friendship was nothing more than a lie. There is more bad news for the townsfolk, however, when one of the suspects flees and disappears. The tension increases when one of the suspects decides to give up his life for the pursuit of the other and they both end up dying in the forest. As the bodies are found, a terrible secret is revealed and this book quickly becomes a dark comedy.

This dark comedy is quite fast-paced and the writing style is very similar to that of a thriller novel. It is written in first person and many times is written with a mixture of humor and drama. In fact, the characters are so like the people that they live around, that you can almost taste the food they eat and the atmosphere they breathe. The story is told through the point of view of the main character, Lexy, and her quest to find out who killed her best friend and how did she get her memory back. The story is told almost as a scene straight from a book or movie.

I enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a mystery thriller, has a love of word puzzles and like me, loved the reference to the local French fries. Mortein Peaceful Nights is available on Amazon Kindle for an affordable price. I know I will have more books in my future that are based on my favorite movies and books.
