Where to buy fish and chips in Greymouth District (NZ)

You may be a newcomer to the Gray District or contemplating traveling there in the near future and wondering where you can buy fish and chips. Here is a selection of places to choose from.

COBDEN MEALS

This is my favorite place for takeout. It is on Bright Street Cobden on the south side of the Grey’s River. From Greymouth cross the bridge, turn left and continue for 150 metres. They do the best fish and chips in the area. It’s not just a takeout store, it’s also a dairy/convenience store that sells many other types of groceries and household items.

RUNANGA TO TAKE

Runanga is 7 kilometers north of Greymouth, but if you’re coming back from a day in Punakaki to see the Pancake Rocks blowholes, you might want to stop by Runanga for some fish and chips on the way home. I consider Runanga’s takeaways to be on par with Cobden Takeaways as they provide good fish and chips.

FOUR J’S TO TAKE (Paroa)

Four Js is a general store, dairy/cafe, and takeout. It’s on the main road in Paroa, you can’t miss the direction you’re driving. If you’re on your way home from a day in Shantytown and want takeout for tea, Four J’s is an option.

MACA SHOP AND TAKE AWAY (Runanga)

Maca’s is on McGowan Street, the main street in Runanga. It serves the local population, so if you end up living in Runanga, you’ll be pleased to know that there are two chippies in town. Maca’s also acts as a general store selling a number of grocery items.

MERV N’ KIPS (Tainui Street)

It’s on Upper Tainui Street, opposite BP.

SANTE FE MILK BAR (Turmaha Street)

Sante Fe is on that street at the back of Dixon Park. Also handy for Anzac Park.

MAGGIE’S CAFE (Mackay Street)

This is not a takeaway, but you can buy fish and chips and other takeaways here during business hours, usually from morning until around 5. I mentioned it here because it’s my favorite cafe in Greymouth. Maggie’s Cafe is on Mackay Street, opposite Paper Plus.

SPEIGHTS ALE HOUSE (Mawhera Quay)
This is a good place to eat in or take out. It has a good bar too.
PARKYS (Marsden Road)
This is just off Shakespeare Street, serving the residential area near the high school.
